A Perfect Afternoon in Solana Beach: Where to Eat + What to Do

One of the things I love about North County San Diego is how easy it is to turn an ordinary afternoon into a really good day.

Solana Beach is perfect for that.

You can wander through local shops, get outside for a little ocean time, have a great dinner and even catch live music — all without spending half the day in your car.

So if you have a free afternoon, a date day coming up, or friends visiting from out of town, here's how I'd spend a few hours in Solana Beach.

Start in the Cedros Design District

Start your afternoon on Cedros Avenue, one of my favorite areas to wander in Solana Beach.

The Cedros Design District is packed into a few walkable blocks with home-design stores, boutiques, galleries and locally owned shops. It's a great place to browse without necessarily having a shopping agenda.

And if you love interiors and home design, give yourself some extra time here. There's plenty of inspiration.

Going on a Sunday?

Even better.

The Solana Beach Farmers Market takes place Sundays in the Cedros Design District, so you can grab produce, flowers and something good to snack on while you're there.

Get Some Ocean Time at Fletcher Cove

From Cedros, head toward the water and stop at Fletcher Cove Beach Park.

You don't necessarily need to make this a full beach day. That's part of what I like about it.

Take a walk, sit for a while and enjoy the view, or head down to the sand if the weather is calling for it.

It's also a good reminder of what makes Solana Beach special: you can go from shopping and restaurants to having your feet in the sand in just a few minutes.

Restaurant to Try: Mia's

Then it's time to eat.

This month's restaurant on my list is Mia's, located along Highway 101 near the Cedros Design District.

Mia's describes its food as a combination of Baja California and Mediterranean influences, with a menu designed around fresh ingredients and dishes that are easy to share.

It's the kind of place that works for happy hour, dinner with friends or an easy date night.

What's on My List to Order

A few things immediately caught my attention:

Mediterranean Ceviche Fresh fish with cucumber, citrus, avocado, mint and cilantro.

Mushroom Chorizo Fundido Mushroom-based chorizo with peppers, onions and melted Chihuahua cheese.

Crispy Fish Tacos Panko-crusted cod with cabbage, cucumber pico and Fresno-harissa ranch.

And then there are the margaritas.

Along with the classics, Mia's has some more interesting combinations, including cucumber-cilantro and carrot-passion fruit.

They also have zero-proof margaritas and cocktails if you're looking for something fun without alcohol.

Happy Hour Tip

If you're doing this itinerary during the week, Mia's currently offers happy hour Monday through Friday from 4–6 PM, with food and drink specials.

Menus and hours can always change, so check before you go.

Want to Keep the Night Going?

Walk back toward Cedros and check the calendar at Belly Up Tavern.

Belly Up has been part of Solana Beach since the 1970s and brings in an incredible range of live music.

This is one of those North County places that's worth knowing about even if you don't have tickets tonight. Check who's coming up and plan your next night out around a show.

My Perfect Solana Beach Afternoon

If I were planning the whole thing, it would look something like this:

2:00 PM — Wander Cedros Design District

3:30 PM — Walk Fletcher Cove and spend some time by the ocean

4:30 PM — Happy hour or early dinner at Mia's

7:00 PM — Live music at Belly Up if there's a show you want to see

Simple. Walkable. And very North County.

What It's Like Living in Solana Beach

Days like this are also a good example of why people love living here.

Solana Beach is small, but you have the beach, restaurants, shopping, the Cedros Design District, live music and outdoor activities all packed into a relatively compact coastal community.

Of course, coastal living comes with tradeoffs — including some of the highest home prices in North County — but there's a lifestyle here that's difficult to replicate.

And that's something I always talk about with people who are relocating to North County.

Finding the right community isn't just about bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage.

It's about what you want your Tuesday afternoon or Saturday morning to look like.
